So I’ve been busy, and as such, haven’t updated this blog for a while.  For the past 2.5 years I have worked as a research engineer in the Interactive Behavioural Analytics (IBA) team for the CSIRO’s Data61.

My work there had two major focuses: I was the project leader for IBA – Cyber Security.  This is a fascinating problem space where we looked at the cognitive drivers and socio-technical predictors of human behaviour around cyber security.  A lot of the work we did could be summed up in the single question: ‘Why do people click on dodgy links?’.   During my period there we engaged in collaborative projects with major FinTech institutions, opened up a whole new area of research for the IBA team and did some fascinating research.  I will be writing more some about that work in upcoming posts.

IBA Computer user 06 Feedback loop_800I also worked on Human-machine trust in the domain of automated systems, Machine Learning and algorithmic based technologies.  In this area, we are trying to understand how people interact with smart technologies, so specifically, ones that learn and adapt, such as Machine Learning.  Since these technologies are so ubiquitous now, it’s increasingly important to understand under what conditions people do, and do not, trust automated predictions.

Below is a list of my main published research outputs over this period.  In the near future I will be writing more posts talking through some of this work in less nose-bleed academic language.  Stay tuned.
